The trailer for this film based on a newspaper feature comic strip of the same name has been around now for a few months, but if you haven’t seen it, it’s to put it mildly a classic, and it certainly had us scratching our heads here. This film is due for release on December 25.

The Spirit (also known as Will Eisner’s The Spirit) is an upcoming 2008 American cop-superhero film adaptation based on the newspaper strip of the same name created by Will Eisner. Batfilm, OddLot, and Lionsgate are set to produce. Frank Miller wrote and directed the film, which stars Gabriel Macht as The Spirit and Samuel L. Jackson as his nemesis, The Octopus. Also starring Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss and Eva Mendes as Sand Saref.

Plot:

Writer/director Frank Miller described the main character:

“ The character has a terrifying side to him. This is a man who’s died and come back to life. So it twists into fantasy. And of course there are tons of women in it. There have to be — it’s the Spirit. They’re all in love with him, and he’s in love with all of them. You might say he’s a bit of a slut. ”

The film series will not begin with an origin story, but will instead open with the adventures of The Spirit already having begun. The film will not be set in the 1940s and early 1950s era of the strip, but rather an alternate past with modern technologies, thus, aiming for a “timeless feel”.

The protagonist will be involved in a love triangle with Sand Saref and Ellen Dolan, the daughter of Central City’s Police Commissioner Dolan. The controversial character Ebony White will not appear in the film..

 So there you go, hope that makes things a bit clearer?

Rating.

Haven’t seen the film but just teaser trailers and the standard trailer featured above and in terms of rating this film,we would say it is in the same sort of category as the recent limited release film called “Repo. The Genetic Opera” which starred Paris Hilton and Sarah Brightman. This is similar, in the fact that we wouldn’t know where to start in rating a film like this, it’s a total wild card. We would further add that film critics may avoid this like the plague as they wouldn’t know where to start rating this ither,  they’d probably give it  just give a 1 star and leave it that!

This could be a 1 star leave the cinema half way through  (we’ve all been there) style film, or a highly unlikely 5 star once in a lifetime unbelievable experience. Lack of ratings aside, this could be a box office success with people going to see the film just to find out what is actually going on here,  and just trying to fathom what the film is all about.  Also the female interests in this film are very interesting and could prove a further lure to pull in viewers. Rating:  Unrated but we are leaning more towards the 1 star zone than the 5 star, but it does look very interesting allthe same. If you fancy something a bit different and off the beaten track its,  to use our phrase , “definetly worth a look”. This is one of those films that has “cult” written all  over it, a potential box office disaster only to be dug up in years to come and rated as “the cult” film of the decade. Its that rank outsider 100/1 long shot in the horse race that just could win and shock everyone………………but then again?!
