The 2009 Australian Open is currently under way being held in Melbourne and there is an all star female tennis player line up.

The World No 1 who has been suffering from flu prior to the build up to this event played Yvonne Muesberger but won with ease with a 2 set victory 6-1 6-3.

Ana Ivanovic the former world No1 played Germany’s Julia Guerges to win in 2 sets 7-5 6-3 enough to secure her passage through to the next round. She is struggling to find her true form as yet but its still early in the season.

Maria Sharapova has confirmed she has pulled out of the Australia Open due to a shoulder injury.

British No1 player Anne Keothavong played well but eventually was beaten by the 17th seed Anna  Chakvetadze   . Melanie South and Katie O’Brien also British tennis hopefuls at this event were also knocked out of this first round.
