Kate Winslet and the Orange British Academy Film Awards 2009

The Orange British Academy Film Awards were held last night at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London and this event had a spectacular A list turnout. It’s events and days like these that make you realise why you run a female celebrity website! The girls were there in force and boy were they looking good! Wall to wall beauty and then some. A typical miserable damp and drizzly cold winters night in London, but that didn’t stop the stars dazzling on this special night.

Kate Winslet is our headline as she won the Best Actress gong and the speech was pretty good with emotions kept reasonably in check but you had the feeling she was really trying hard to keep her cool but there was evidence she had actually rehearsed for this acceptance speech. She was double nominated in this category for her roles in “The Reader” and “Revolutionary Road” and “the Reader” provided her with the gong ahead of names such as Angelina Jolie.

Although Kate is our headline, the event headline has got to go to SlumDog Millionaire which cleaned up at this event winning severals gongs across a broad range of categories. The other major headline is Frieda Pinto who gets the red carpet glam award from us, she’s a newcomer to the red carpet scene, but manages to pull these events of with a certain panache that comes from the more seasoned stars and the British Academy Film Awards was no exception. One to keep an eye on this lady, we feel she could be going places.

Penelope Cruz also got the red carpet glam award from us, she rarely gets it wrong, and won the Best Supporting Actresss Award for her role in Vicky Christina Barcelona which we rated highly in our review and her speech with that beautiful accent was superb.

So who was there? There must have been as many Hollywood stars as Brit ones at this event with the list reading like a who’s who. Angelina Jolie and Brad pitt, Frieda Pinto, Marisa Tomei, Penelope Cruz, Sharon Stone, Kate Winslet, Emma Watson, Marion Cotillard, Gemma Arterton, Thandie Newton and the list goes on.

Huge amount of thumb galleries for this event and some best of the red carpet full size photo’s at the bottom of this post.

The after event party and dinner was held at Grosvenor House in Park Lane and went on into the early hours. The headline was that the “Brangelina” were not seen at the event according to a London paper not even for 5 minutes and in effect snubbed it. They were both up for awards but none of them won but the film which starred Brad Pitt picked up various technical awards.

Emma Watson was also another headline she was spotted at the Soho House Grey Goose after party at the Grosvenor House hotel  getting swamped by guys trying to grab her attention as she flitted between the 15 party suites. She ended up getting cosy with Stormbreaker star Alex Pettyfer.
