Madonna has lost her right to adopt the young boy from Malawi by the name of “Mercy”, that has been dominating the headlines of late, a heavy blow for Madonna who has been in the country for the past week with her daughter Lourdes. Residency rules were cited with a time period of 18-24 months requirement in Malawi being quoted, which were not used in her last adoption and the Malawi court in Lilongwe has ruled against Madonna in adopting the boy and taking him back to the US to be part of her family and lifestyle. This raise all sorts of questions with the main one being if a celebrity as powerful and wealthy as Madonna is beaten by the courts in Malawi, this may set a future precedent for other out of country celebrity adoptions and many female celebrities will be watching this situation closely, Angelina Jolie being a name that springs to mind, as there are others that are thinking of taking the African adoption route, this may make them think twice.
Many critics have been against this adoption and Madonna has payed a heavy price in time, a dropped relationship with Jesus Luz (may have happened eventually), and the emotional turmoil she has had to go through only to be told at the last minute the answer is a firm “NO”. It will be interesting to see if she takes this any further and whether there is any appeal process, as she appears the type to not take this lying down! Her lawyer according to the UK Independent Newspaper has stated Madonna will probably appeal!
