Justine Henin through to semis but Williams Sisters Final is likely at 2010 Australian Open

With the first Grand Slam Final of the season in the form of the 2010 Australian Open getting ever closer, sport media pundits are becoming  aware that the possibility of a Williams sister final looks increasingly imminent. Is this the shape of the tennis season to come? Justine Henin below could be possibly set to change that outcome?

2010 Australian Open - Day 9

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – JANUARY 26: Justine Henin of Belgium celebrates winning a point in her quarterfinal match against Nadia Petrova of Russia during day nine of the 2010 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 26, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Mark Dadswell/Getty Images)

Some big names have fallen before the final stages in the last few days with Dinara Safina of Russia, the Worlds No2 crashing out in an earlier round due to serious back injuries that brought her match to a grinding halt in mid play. Kim Clijsters also recently knocked out due to a decline in form and was one of the bookies top four favourites, it is now down to the recent comeback Queen Justine Henin of Belgium to unseat the potential Williams Sisters domination of this event at the finals.

Recent Womens Singles 4th Round Results (Seed in Brackets)

(1) Serena Williams (USA) bt (13) Samantha Stosur (Aus) 6-4, 6-2

(7) Victoria Azarenka (Blr) bt (9) Vera Zvonareva (Rus) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0

(16) Na Li (Chn) bt (4) Caroline Wozniaki (Den) 6-4, 6-3

(6) Venus Williams (USA) bt (17) Francesca Schiavrone (Ita) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1

Latest Results 26 January

Zheng Jie bt Maria Kirilenk 6-1, 6-3

Justine Henin bt Nadia Petrova 7-6 (7/3), 7-5

Zheng Jie downed Kirilenko and is through to Thursday’s semi-final showdown with seven-time grand slam champion Justine Henin. She is the first Chinese Tennis player to reach the semi finals of the Australian Open. This is a player that we remember from Wimbledon 2008 and have been watching closely ever since. She caused chaos with the big name players in 2008 and had a wild card ranking but managed to see off some big tennis names to reach the Wimbledon Semi Final. Not one to be written off as she has the ability and is not intimidated by the aura of higher ranked players and has the added bonus she has nothing to lose and everything to gain in seeding terms. As the Times puts it very well Zheng Jie is “a surprise” player, the joker in the pack and she can be dangerous!

Justine Henin is the more solid backing even though she has only just recently made her comeback. She is a seven-time Grand Slam winner, the fiercely competitive Henin retired in May 2008 while ranked number one, saying she was burnt out. That’s all changed and she is now in quick return flying form and looks set to upset the Williams sister domination in 2010!. Question is can she do it?. Semi Finals are Thursday!
