Katie Melua has a new number out on Monday in the UK called “A Happy Place” taken from her latest second album called “The House”, it’s being billed as different, fresh and original………..question is……….is it any good, lets take a closer look and pull this song and vid to pieces!
The Verdict:
A no messing straight in there kind of song with no gradual intro and the video straight out and within 10 seconds looks to be a bit different from your normal music vid. Probably lost on many but top marks for a very unusual video……….apparently shot in Berlin, Germany!
Onto the song and Katie Melua’s fresh vocals dominate with some incredibly delicate but strangely powerful vocals, a very innovative sound and classy to boot, she has a sound you could listen to for hours on end and never get tired off! Decent intelligent lyrics on this song veering from the usual pop style brain numbing format. Originality of the material it has to be said, is also very high with this song, not following the masses but going her own way and creating her own “brand” of sound.
This is all shaping up to be a high scoring number as there is talent here and most importantly her originality stems from her writing her own material. Here’s the negs. Although this is a technically superb sound for some reason the whole thing just doesn’t seem to hang for us here, as in the musical whole, the vibe isn’t there and we feel others may feel the same way, it just lacks that certain something.
Also the video as quirky and original as it is, may be too arty for some and could hamper the songs success, but that’s just our view and only forms a small part of our final rating. This is a 4 star song based on technicals but with those other musical factors in mind which are incredibly important and give a song it’s “soul”, this song comes out at a still respectable 3 stars+++++++++.
Chart wise, Katie Melua has a following, it could do well, but we think it’s just slightly off the pop beaten road to cause any Top 5 chaos, but as always we could be wrong and we hope we are, as she deserves to do well!!
