The official video was released late yesterday UK time amidst a Twitter frenzy, it’s here still steaming after drawing a blank at You Tube with good old EMI blocking the proceedings but not one for giving up thanks to OnSmash we have the goodies if even it’s not exactly HD! Lets put this through some critical analysis and see whether Katy Perry is still “on song” in the music business!
The Verdict:
Firstly this song has been pre rated at 3 and half stars ++ on a sampler so really it’s all down to the video to propel this any higher!
Firstly the video it’s very much the teenage dream theme, it’s a good match to the song, a bit of lingerie, snogging and sans make up and still looking good from Katy Perry, it’s good if not exceptional. Apparently this was shot in Santa Barbara and some of her friends appear in it.
Onto the song, some good backing here showing some reasonable complexity, the bubble gum factor is turned down considerably in this number compared to her previous offering “California Gurls” so thumbs up on that count from us here, it has a bit more bite and is a technically superior number. Vocals are spot on showing some good range with some delicious lows and velvety but forceful highs, which is what you come to expect from Katy Perry, lyrics are reasonable if not earth shattering, and the song hangs together as a musical whole. All shaping up to be maybe a 4 star song BUT there is quite a bit of repetition here, not overly so, but enough to affect the shelf life or as we call it “longevity” which marks the song down a touch, otherwise this is a decent number and deserves yet again to go all the way to the No1 slot as did her previous offering. Final Rating 3 and half stars +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ just shy of four stars.
A decent drill in your head addictive poppy tune! Teenage Dream is the title track off her new album of the same name coming out later this month!
