Caroline Wozniacki
With the US Open the last of the four major Grand slam events starting today, here’s a closer look at the WTA WomensWorld Tennis Rankings as at 22 August. No change at the top with Caroline Wozniacki absolutely without doubt as far as points are concerned claiming the crown with newcomer Vera Zvonereva about 2.5K back at No2. The big names such as Clijsters, Sharapova and Azarenka claiming 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. Petra Kvitova who beat Maria Sharapova in the recent 2011 Wimbledon finals to win the event is just outside at No6.
So who’s going to win this? Anybodies guess on this one. Sharapova will be the media favourite, Zvonereva was finalist here last year but is not firing on all cylinders this season, she could still do it if she suddenly finds form. Wozniacki is way off form at the moment but there is a possibility. The Williams sisters are back but judging by their performance at Wimbledon it will be an uphill struggle to say the least, if they reach the quarters they will have done well, but the media will be on these two regardless. The Williams sisters ability is not in question but the current form is, it takes time to get form back.
Then the recent Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, a left hander, she played very well, that win was no fluke, this could be hers to win. More names include Li Na, Schiavoni, Stosur, all capable of winning this event with Li Na this years French Open winner played on a hard surface like the US Open, another strong poss. Bookies odds are worth a look to give some more indication but this year they need to be taken with a pinch of salt hence their lack of inclusion. Wide open at the Women’s US Open is not the word!
