The 2012 Olivier Awards were held tonight April 15th at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in Central London. The Olivier awards are named after the legendary British actor Laurence Olivier, these awards are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognise excellence in professional theatre. It’s a sort of BAFTA’s or Academy Awards for those actors or thespians as they like to be called who perform on the theatre stage. These are awards for performing LIVE and you could say they are the best………no Take 2 here!. The American equivalent of the Olivier awards would be The Tony Awards.

The 2012 Olivier Awards were presented by Sweeney Todd stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton. At the ceremony, Brian May joined the cast of Queen musical “We Will Rock You” for a rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, also Ronan Keating did a duet performance with Shrek The Musical’s Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud fame.

The Roald Dahl inspired “Matilda the Musical” which is a Royal Shakespeare Production dominated this years Olivier awards event with7 gong wins a record with Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram, Sophia Kiely and Eleanor Worthington Cox, aged between 10 and 12 years old apparently being the youngest ever recipients of an Olivier Award, according to the event organisers.
