Lana Del Rey and Carmen “Official Video” and Verdict!
Some Music News. Lana Del Rey has a new single and the official video surfaced a couple of days ago via her official You Tube and it’s called “Carmen”. It’s taken off her rather cheerfully titled “Born to Die” Album. This article was on my phone yesterday half written but ended up being subjected to what can only be described as “celebrity blogger error”. Blame Mr Efron and The Lucky One Premiere for that. Chaos!
Now that the Efron storm has passed back to this vid as she needs to be on this site. It’s a rather clever video and intermixed in the video are scenes from the 1950s and early 60s with strippers and pole dancers thrown into the mix?. Del Rey appears interspersed fleetingly as period characters. She describes the video as “Bio Pic”. She’s 25 so scenes from the 50′s and 60′s are hardly biopic, maybe she wishes she was around at those times…but we get the idea anyway? Maybe she was a pole dancer?? . I wish I was around in the swinging 60s, would have fitted in a treat.
The video features various references to New York as she is a native of that State (raised in upstate New York) and also makes references to methamphetamine and the effect it can have on your brain if you can spell it.
Her album has hit No2 on the Billboard 200 but has received mixed to negative reviews from the music press including Rolling Stone. Make of that what you will. She’s had extensive media coverage over here in the UK and the album has hit Number 1 over here which makes a bit of a mockery of the music critics..
Verdict: Impressive numbers but what’s this new song like? On first listen the video screams originality and the song more of the same…..perfect match. A sort of deeper slower less piercing Florence Welch but then again not really. Vocally she’s good indeed and she certainly has her own sound and that’s what matters…..originality again very high. Pretty good is the view at this end, although muscially an acquired taste just like Ms Welch….not for everybody…it’s hardly Katy Perry is it. BUT the chart numbers tell a different story!
