The Inside Soap Awards 2012 were held last night in Central London, so armed with some decent photo kit, it was decided to get a few shots of some Brit TV stars in the flesh if the rain held off. (Gallery at foot of this article)
The event is a celebration of Soap TV and an awards event focusing on soap style TV programs in the UK. In size terms a small/medium sized event with plenty of chances for some up close and personal shots in a portrait style with a few candid and full length shots to add some variety to the proceedings.
These are people you see on TV everyday but there’s nothing like seeing them amd hearing them interacting with the crowd of fans……raw and unscripted.

Date: 24 October
Location: One Marylebone (a converted church), One Marylebone Road, London NW1
Time: Approx 6pm
Arrived: At before 5pm, a quick inside chat with security and the verdict was come back about 5.45pm and grab a bite.
Crowds: About 60-70 increasing with more passers by tagging on as stars arrived.
Weather: Rain earlier in the day which cleared just before the event to clouds and bright sunshine. Our luck is in!
Camera: Canon 30d standard press rig stylwe. Speed and a powerful flash being the main requirements here. Lens 50mm prime. Love prime lenses. Not a huge fan of zooms although they do make your job considerably easier.
Exposure Mode: Manual in daylight switching to Aperture Priority as the sun dropped and things got a bit manic to give some extra speed to capture candids and moments. Once they’re gone they are gone!
Flash: Manual throughout used as fill early on then balance then flash as the main source later on. Soft power levels as the stars were some times literally feet away to ensure skin tones are maintained.
Exposure Settings: All over the shop f3 to f13 settling down once the sun was down. Shutter speed fairly constant at plus or minus one stop.
Shooting Style: Crazy and mixed up roving style paparazzi or wedding style photography grabbing moment shots from various spots from within the crowd as they developed. If you stood still you would miss sheds loads of pics.
Press: Yes but few outside most were inside taking shots with the standard ad board backdrop which it has to be said is not my scene.
Shots Taken: About 120-130 or so with excellent hit rate of 90% keepers.
Left: About 7.30pm with a shoot time of 1 and a half hours
